HELLO AND WELCOME!

Welcome to my website! I'm an Edinburgh based illustrator and I also work in the world of comic books, under the pen-name "Stref". I provide professional illustrator services for a vast range of clients on a wide variety of projects. I have had four graphic novels published since 2009, most notably the UK's first ever graphic novel adaptation of J M Barrie's Peter Pan. Comic publications I have contributed to include: the Beano, the Dandy, Commando, Oor Wullie, the Broons, and Viz. I also provide illustrations for the Tattoo Fox children's books. I have an extensive and diverse portfolio of work that includes illustration, cartoons, comic book art, and storyboards. Please contact me at: mobile: 07467202935 email: [email protected]

J M BARRIE'S PETER PAN, the GRAPHIC NOVEL

My adaptation of J M BARRIE'S PETER PAN, published in 2015, was the first of it's kind in the UK. I adapted the script using Barrie's own words, and produced the black and white artwork. The colours were added by talented colourist Fin Cramb. This book was six years in the making, and the extensive research that was done prior to production, ensured an authentic adaptation of the original author's work. The book was reviewed by Dave Gibbons, co-creator of the Watchmen graphic novel, for the First Minister's Reading Challenge. Here's what he had to say: "This new graphic novel adaptation of Peter Pan by Stref successfully supplants the comforting cartoon visuals of Walt Disney and returns the story to the darker mood and imagery of the early 20th century. The formal compositions and fastidious linework echo the stage presentations of the original drama while transporting the reader to an exotic Neverland, where thrilling adventures await. -DAVE GIBBONS, (comic artist, writer and co-creator of the Watchmen graphic novel) You can find out more about this book and how to purchase a copy on the J M BARRIE'S PETER PAN Facebook page, where lots of hidden secrets within it's pages are also revealed!

GRAPHIC NOVELS: MILK

MILK, 2009 A concept graphic novel, comprising of several short stories, all written and drawn in different styles. "Coming from a virtually unknown artist, MILK contains some of the most beautiful, expressive art that I've seen in a long time. It deserves to be a huge commercial success". ALAN GRANT, comic book writer (Judge Dredd, Batman)

GRAPHIC NOVELS: RAISING AMY

A collection of newspaper style cartoon strips. She's armed, she's dangerous, and she's a proper Scottish ginger nutcase! Just be thankful she's not yours! "With Raising Amy Stref has created a glossy, colourful and delightfully enjoyable Minnie the Minx for the 21st century". Downthetubes.net

GRAPHIC NOVELS: X

Set in the future, a serial killer known only as X is on the loose, on the streets of Edinburgh. "X is definitely not for the squeamish, but it is much more than the mere gore-fest that an initial glance would suggest". Downthetubes.net

CHILDREN'S BOOK: FRED and ORBIT

Being the adventures of an old threadbare teddy and a shiny new robot! These stories bridge the gap between children's books and comics, with each page containing a rhyme and one cartoon panel with speech bubbles.

CHILDREN'S BOOK: THE TATTOO FOX

Written by Alasdair Hutton, who has narrated the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo for over twenty years, the Tattoo Fox is a charming novel about the adventures of a little fox that lives in Edinburgh Castle. The second book is titled The Tattoo Fox and Friends.

OOR WULLIE and THE BROONS

I have worked with D C Thomson on many of their comic publications. Characters I have contributed artwork to include: Dennis the Menace, the Bash Street Kids, Minnie the Minx, Desperate Dan, Winker Watson, and many more! The most famous DCT characters that I worked with are undoubtably the nationally treasured strips: Oor Wullie and The Broons. I produced artwork for many projects involving these characters, including concept designs for the Oor Wullie statue that sits in Dundee, just outside the DCT building. I also produced a Broons special, which featured a version of the famous Tam O'Shanter verses by Robert Burns, with Paw Broon as Tam and Granpaw Broon as the Devil!

VIZ MAGAZINE

I have worked for Viz magazine since 2017, producing many different strips in a wide variety of styles. Strips I regularly work on include: the Broon Windsors, Oor Prince Wullie, and Foodie Bollocks.

STORYBOARDS

I have worked on many film projects, producing poster, concept, and storyboard art. I also regularly storyboard the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo.
